On October 3, 2018, the RBI imposed a penalty of Rs 50 million on Federal Bank Limited, where one of the reasons for the fine was cited as non-compliance with AML and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) norms.
In December 2017, Syndicate Bank was fined Rs 50 million in December 2017 for failing to adhere to KYC/AML norms.
Despite having sound risk management policies, banks have been blindsided into doing business with banned organizations. A Thomson Reuters’ survey (link) revealed that banks have collectively been fined over US$14 billion, with the BNP Paribas (US$8.9 billion) and HSBC (US$1.9 billion) topping the list for facilitating transactions between banned entities.
What can banks do to act against money launderers?
How can they ensure they comply with the RBI directives and do not, knowingly or otherwise, facilitate a dubious transaction?
The first step is to phase out manual activities in battling money laundering.

Secondly, international and domestic law enforcement agencies maintain databases that list individuals and entities that are engaged in terrorist, narcotics or other banned activities. These databases are continuously updated and it is difficult for banks to manually monitor their transaction counter-parties based on these databases.
